Wine Profile:
Vintage: 2014
Varietal Composition:
100% Gewurztraminer
Tasting Notes:

Just as Gewurztraminer should be, abundant and almost to the point of being obnoxious. This wine is certainly flamboyant with its lychee, rose petal and persimmon aromas shooting from the glass. The palate is rich and mouth filling showing some more of that great exotic fruit and just enough acidity to keep the wine from being blousy. Awesome in the summer or spring. Best to drink in the next few years to enjoy all the exuberance it brings.

Vineyard Notes:

The fruit for this Gewurztraminer all came from the Yakima Valley from Crawford Vineyard which is pretty close to the base of Snipes Mountain. A very dry vineyard with intense summer heat and sun cooling dramatically at night leads to rich and powerful wines that can still maintain a sense of elegance through its acidity. The Loess soils are also incredibly well drained combining with being in dessert like conditions the wines tend to have great density.

Production Notes:

The 2014 vintage in Washington State showed some very intense heat during the days while still cooling off at night. The fruit set was about average so there was sufficient fruit around the State which was good to allow a little prolonged ripening since it was so hot and dry. The wine are rich and powerful with generous fruit all held together with balanced acidity.

Winemaker Notes:

The Gewurztraminer was about as basic winemaking as it gets. The fruit came in cold from its long trip on a reefer truck so was crushed and left to sit in the press for several hours to get some skin contact before pressing. The wine was pressed (after the free run had gone through obviously so only a small amount stayed on the skins but all was blended to one tank) to a maximum of 1.2 bars to be gentle with the fruit. The wine was fermented at cool temperatures never surpassing 56 degrees F in stainless steel. The wine stayed in tank for 5 months before being filtered and bottled.

Food Pairing:

While this wine does not necessarily need food it is great with some ceviche or with some Thai food as long as is isn’t too spicy (the alcohol is pretty high so hot food will get really hot!). I actually loved it with some Pad Thai.
