2013 Killer Cluster Riesling

2013 Killer Cluster Riesling

Washington State grown  -made here in Virginia.  This Riesling was selected to bring in because simply put we love Riesling but can't grow it well here.  When we decided to bring fruit in from Washington State we knew we wanted to bring in not grapes we do well here, but those that are suited more to their terroir.

About This Wine:
What a Killer Cluster!!! Take it however you want. When hit with a multitude of different weather events, a short crop all over our fine state, wildly increasing demand and press, and knowing that new plantings would take years we could only do one thing. Our option was to find new sources so that's what we did. We set out to find the best grapes we could and we found them in Walla Walla, Horse Heaven Hills and Columbia Valley. When the grapes arrived, we could only say one thing - what a Killer Cluster!

Tasting Notes:

Classic old school bone dry Riesling. This is what the winemaking team often loves to sip. The aromatics are plentiful with lime, minerality, granny smith apple and lemon zest character. The palate is light to medium bodied with a good but balanced backbone of acidity helping the finish linger and showing the great aging potential. Have some patience and let this lay down for a few years.

Vineyard Notes:

The Columbia Valley AVA lies mostly in Washington state, with a small section in Oregon. The Cascade Range forms its western boundary with the Palouse regions bordering the area to the east. To the north, the Okanogan National Forest forms a border with the AVA and Canada. It encompasses the valleys formed by the Columbia River and its tributaries, including the Walla Walla River, the Snake River, and the Yakima River. The Columbia valley stretches between the 46th parallel and 47th parallel which puts it in line with the well known French wine growing regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. The northern latitude gives the areas two more hours of additional daylight during the summer growing season than wine regions of California receive. The volcanic and sandy loam soil of the valley offers good drainage and is poor in nutrients, ideal in forcing the vine to concentrate its resources into the grape clusters. Eight smaller AVAs designate unique growing areas of special distinction within the larger Columbia Valley AVA. These are the Yakima Valley AVA, the Red Mountain AVA, the Walla Walla Valley AVA, the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, Lake Chelan AVA, Snipes Mountain AVA and the Wahluke Slope AVA. North of the Rattlesnake Hills is a region commonly known as Columbia Cascade, but which is not officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area. Other wine growing regions of distinction that have not yet been granted AVA status include the Othello region located in Adams County and the Tri-Cities area around the towns of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland.

Production Notes:

Very simplictic winemakinf as Riesling should be. The lightly pressed grapes were allowed to slowly ferment cool with commercial yeast for 23 days. That cool ferment allowed the aromatics to be well captured and the wine was made. Seven months later the wine was racked, filtered and bottled in June 2014.

Food Pairing:

There is something just so lovely about sipping crisp dry Riesling al fresco with some simple bistro style food like Milcreek Farm Chicken simply roasted with a side salad or even some twice fried fries with Fleur d'Sel.
