Tasting Notes:

An intense wine showing great aromatics of blackberry, plum, smoke, coconut and slight floral undertones. The palate is obviously still youthful with abundant but fine grained tannins holding together the great fruit in this wine. The acidity is just enough to keep it in check given the round and full mid-palate.

Vineyard Notes:

The fruit for this Syrah all came from the Yakima Valley from Crawford Vineyard which is pretty close to the base of Snipes Mountain. A very dry vineyard with intense summer heat and sun cooling dramatically at night leads to rich and powerful wines that can still maintain a sense of elegance through its acidity. The Loess soils are also incredibly well drained combining with being in dessert like conditions the wines tend to have great density.

Production Notes:

The Syrah was made using primarily destemmed fruit with only 15 percent being left whole cluster in order to keep some refinement over tannic structure. Understanding that 2013 was even hotter and drier than normal in Yakima the berry size was quite small and the skins quite thick meaning the added tannin of the stems may have been too much. The 15 percent used was just enough to help give this wine added elements of structure which will help it age gracefully. Most of the wine was controlled to not surpass 75 degrees allowing enough warmth for extraction but cool enough to preserve some of Syrah’s beautiful aromatics. The wine was pressed after 33 days and settled into barrel for 18 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Food Pairing:

If you love Lamb, time to go get a Leg of Lamb and do traditional rosemary rubbed roast. It will also work great with some Cumin roasted pork tenderloin.
