Pond Block

Pond Block

The Pond Block is our coolest, breeziest site with the most complex soil structure.  There is still some of the Penn Silt Loam but it is also quite sandy due to its lower elevation and being closer to the Potomac.  Intertwined in there are a few limestone deposits as well.  Together, the soil is better drained so makes wines of great concentration, but because of the cooler temperature, preserves some freshness and bright fruit making it a really exciting place to grow grapes.  Until recently the Pond Block was wildly underutilized with varieties that struggled, including Pinot Gris (just too hot anywhere in Northern Virginia for delicate early ripeners such as this), and Grenache and Mourvedre which both struggled to ripen.  That said, the Merlot and Viognier that were planted in 1992 have always being some of the most elegant, yet concentrated, and exciting, complex wines we produce each year.  We have also now planted more Viognier, Tannat, and Petit Verdot where the under-performing varieties were.  This planting occurred in 2013.  The total acreage of the Pond Block is 11.82 acres.
